Sight Flow Indicator

A sight flow indicator is a visual device installed in a pipeline that allows operators to see the movement of liquids inside the system. When choosing the right sight glass, consider:

• Fluid type (water, chemicals, oil, corrosive media)
• Pressure and temperature rating
• Flow rate and pipe size
• Visibility requirement (rotary, flapper, or plain window)
• Glass material (borosilicate, toughened glass, acrylic depending on fluid compatibility)
• Connection type (flanged, threaded, wafer)
• Industry standards required (food grade, chemical grade, etc.)

To ensure long service life:

• Install in a straight section of pipeline for clear visual flow
• Avoid mounting too close to pumps or valves that cause turbulence
• Use proper gaskets and ensure leak-free sealing
• Protect glass surfaces from mechanical stress or sudden pressure spikes
• Periodically clean the glass to remove scale, sediment, or chemical deposits
• Inspect for cracks or scratches and replace glass if damaged
• Ensure the indicator is compatible with the fluid to prevent corrosion

Common problems and solutions include:

• Cloudy or stained glass: Clean the glass or replace it if permanently etched by chemicals.
• Leakage at joints: Check gasket condition, retighten bolts, or use compatible sealing materials.
• Poor visibility of flow: Verify if the fluid is too opaque, flow is too low, or the wrong indicator type was chosen.
• Rotor not spinning / flapper not moving: Check for blocked flow, debris buildup, or worn internal components.
